The Mega Millions lottery is a multi-state lottery that was first launched in August 1996. At that time, only six states were members, but more joined as the game gained popularity. Today, there are 47 U.S. jurisdictions that participate in the lottery, including Alaska, Louisiana, New Mexico, New York, and Ohio. The game has undergone several changes since its beginning, including changing its name twice: “The Big Game” in 2002 and “Mega Millions” in 2005.

Scamming
It is possible to get scammed in the lottery by someone claiming to have won a prize. You should be extremely cautious, though. If someone contacts you and asks for money up front to claim your prize, they are most likely a scammer. Legitimate lotteries do not require any upfront payment for winnings. Moreover, you should never provide your contact information to the scammer.
Buying tickets
Despite the low odds of winning the lottery, many people still purchase lottery tickets. While most of us don’t invest our life savings in this activity, we enjoy the fantasy of winning and are content to purchase a ticket just for the fun of it. In fact, we’ve all seen the Powerball jackpot reach record highs.
